A Grand Entrance at St. Josaphat Basilica

A grand entrance is a thing to behold.

And when it’s the grand entrance of a stunning bride on the arm of her adoring father as he walks her down the ever-so-dramatic aisle of the Basilica of St. Josaphat … well, it can be downright stunning.

That’s exactly the case for Bridget and Chris, who said their vows this year at Milwaukee’s most stunning Catholic church.

It’s such a beautiful moment that we’re sharing it as part of our Moments of a Lifetime series. It’s just so moving!

The scene starts with Bridget and her father behind the main doors into the church sanctuary.  Bridget holds her father’s arm, but then shivers with excitement.

Guests are standing and waiting. The music cues, and yet there’s still a pause.

The doors open, and Bridget and her father are in the doorway. Bridget’s father pats her arm and the two walk into the sanctuary.

Chris, who has been waiting so patiently at the alter for his bride, sees Bridget for the first time in her dress. His smile is infectious, and the joy is equally evident.

It’s a long walk up that main aisle at the basilica, and you can see Bridget checking in with Chris, and his excitement for her to get to him.

The scene ends with a beautiful camera angle in the balcony of the basilica, which gives you a sense of scale of this beautiful house of worship.

A Grand Strategy

If you’re wondering why this moment has such great emotion and feel to it, it’s because of the multiple angles we filmed.

First, there’s the mobile gimbal camera with Bridget and her father in the entryway. Don’t you feel like you’re walking right along with them? We also love this camera’s angle later in the scene, when Bridget and her father are a little farther up the aisle and you can see the faces of all the smiling guests who are watching that long walk up.

There’s the front camera capturing the doors open — the anticipation! — and Bridget and her father’s long walk to the altar.

Then, there’s the groom camera, strategically set off to the left and very high to ensure that Chris’ face is captured when he sees Bridget’s grand entrance.

Lastly, back to that balcony camera. This particular angle in this particular church always reminds us of that beautiful wedding scene in “The Sound of Music,” when Maria is walking up that very long church aisle.

Get the Best Shots

If you’re considering videography for your wedding, we always recommend asking vendors how many cameras they use and how they place them in order to get the best shots!

We hope you enjoyed this Moments of a Lifetime video!

Families’ Bond Blooms into Love in Springfield

Families bond in many ways: location, church, civic groups and kids.

As kids, Maureen and John knew each other quite well. Their families in Springfield, Ill., had forged deep connections through church, camping trips and sports. While growing up, Maureen remembers John as just another one of her brother’s friends.

Fast forward many years, and those close bonds of friendship paved the way for something new.

About four years ago, Maureen’s sister decided these two should meet and invited them to a gathering to see if sparks would fly. The attraction was immediate, Maureen said, and they’ve been together ever since.

And in mid-November these two officially said their vows at St. John’s Lutheran Church followed by a gracious reception at the President Abraham Lincoln Springfield Double Tree Hilton Hotel.

Families welcome us in

Maureen and John are straight shooters who are warm, considerate and circumspect, and this couple welcomed us to their wedding weekend celebration with open arms.

When a Sweet Pea couple is on the modest side, we know we need to take extra care to find out how they communicate and show love.

We’ll never forget the quiet devotion to each other that these two shared. They were always checking in with each other, always making sure the other was doing OK.

But you can imagine our joy when we watched these two expressing their love in the most subtle of ways.

One of our favorites made it into their Sneak Peek.

It was during the ceremony processional when John got his first glimpse of Maureen walking toward him.

Suddenly a tiny smile crossed John’s face. And it said it ALL: love, joy, relief, pride, happiness.

But don’t blink, because the moment comes and goes in a flash, like a shooting star.

We’ll also never forget the hospitality that the Rodenburg and Moulton families and friends showed us that weekend. When we’re trusted to do our jobs, it actually makes our jobs so much easier!

We’ll also never forget how chilly it was, too. It’s a rare occasion for us to capture imagery of snow AND glorious fall color at the same time.

Congrats to the newlyweds, and we hope you enjoy their Sneak Peek as much as we have!

Cheers,

Cindy

We’re giving away a FREE wedding planning book here!

Giveaway for 2019!

Giveaways are exciting to say the least!

In this season of giving, we’ve partnered with Wisconsin Bride, one of our favorite wedding resources, to give away 30 of their pretty and practical “WEDDINGS” books.

It’s a stunning glossy book of wedding inspirations that retails for $8.99.

We know most of you do a vast majority of your wedding planning online. Of course, that’s the smart and efficient way to GET … THINGS … DONE!

But sometimes, it’s nice to curl up on the couch with a cup of hot cocoa or a glass of wine and a good book. To me, there’s nothing more relaxing than leisurely turning the pages of a glossy book, as opposed to what can feel like frantic scrolling, scrolling, scrolling on Instagram or Pinterest.

Giveaway – What’s inside?

If you’re lucky to get one of the 30 free Wisconsin Bride WEDDINGS books, you’ll definitely want to turn to Page 58 … 🙂

If you’re lucky enough to be the recipient of one of these giveaways, you’ll definitely want to flip to Page 58.

That’s where you’ll find us!

You’ll see Alyssa and Joe, one of our 2017 couples who had a glorious wedding ceremony and reception at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Not only was their ceremony heart-felt and emotional, their reception – with a live band – rocked the artwork on the walls a bit!

But that’s not all you’ll find.

The planning book includes 25 pages of real couples who had real weddings at places like Villa Terra Decorative Arts Museum in Milwaukee to The American Club in Kohler and many places in between. What we love about this particular feature is that each featured wedding includes clear information about the vendors who helped the couple achieve their unique look.

So, enter, have fun and cross your fingers you’ll be one of the lucky 30!

Italy … We’re Going, We’re Planning, We’re Excited!

Italy is the topic of today’s post, and you’re probably wondering: What does this have to do with wedding videography?

To be frank: Nothing.

It seems like there’s never enough space to write in our blog about about all the things going on in our life outside of our work for Sweet Pea Cinema, as well as Johnson & Johnson Creative Content, which is our corporate videography brand.

So we are peeling off a little space to talk about non-wedding video things.

Such as our upcoming trip to Italy!!!!

That’s right. We’re leaving on Jan. 5 and returning Jan. 19th. Two full weeks of travel throughout Bel Paese (the Beautiful Country).

It’s been forever since Dean and I were able to take this much time off together and explore. In fact, our last great wandering was to Amsterdam, Brussels and Germany with great friends, Marty & Sheryl in 2009. So, almost 10 years since our last great adventure overseas.

Italy: Why there and why now?

You might be asking why we picked country and really curious about a trip in winter.

The answer lies primarily with Aaron, one of my stepsons and Dean’s youngest.

Let me explain: Aaron was supposed to go on a school band trip to England over New Year’s of 2015. But the unthinkable happened: He was diagnosed with kidney failure from a rare autoimmune disease. Out of the blue.

It was the most devastating news we have ever received.

So, not only did AJ miss that once-in-a-lifetime trip, but he also had to face life as a seriously sick teen. His life completely changed, and so did ours. AJ spent the next year and a-half on dialysis, which is a lengthy, complicated and not very comfortably process of machines cleaning his blood of toxins, since his kidneys were no longer capable of doing the work. He spent four hours, starting at 5:30 a.m., every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin on dialysis, and the process almost always made him feel drained.

Dialysis is no fun, but it’s the only thing that keeps people in kidney failure alive.

Thankfully, AJ received a kidney transplant in February of 2016, which has changed his life so much for the better and has freed him from the trials of dialysis. We could not be more happy!

Make a Wish for Italy

One of the very few bright spots in Aaron’s harrowing medical journey was that as a renal patient under 18, he was eligible for a Make a Wish. Aaron has always had a passion for food, so his request was an eating tour of Italy. I have to admit everyone in his family — his mom, Carolyn, her partner Mark, his older brother Jake, and us — were pretty excited about the possibility of taking this kid on an amazing trip to eat fantastic food and forget about his challenges for awhile.

Unfortunately, this particular wish of Aaron’s did not get granted. But honestly, don’t be mad at the MAW people. It’s totally OK!

When his wish didn’t seem to be getting any traction, he was encouraged to change it. Voila! His second wish was granted in a heartbeat. He asked for and received the gift of having his first year of tuition at the University of Wisconsin-Madison paid for. We’re forever thankful to the generous Make a Wish donors who made that dream for Aaron come true.

Italy ‘wish’ nagged at me

But back to that wish of AJ’s to experience Italian cuisine in its most authentic place.

For the last three years, I have been particularly nagged by that trip not having been taken. And earlier this year, I planted a flag in the sand, and I asked Dean to seriously consider taking both of the boys on a trip to Italy, for food, adventure and bonding.

Thankfully, my hubby is always ready to jump on an adventure, and after examining our budget and prioritizing our free time, we decided to do it.

The next step was to gauge interest from the guys.

It was an automatic yes for AJ. I mean, it had been his dream for more than three years. He was ready!

Sadly, it was a no from Jake. And while we are totally bummed that he can’t come, we understand completely why he can’t. He recently got a great job at a company that he’s been hoping to work for ever since he was an undergrad in the electrical engineering program at UW-Madison. Gotta say, not many young people would skip an all-expenses paid trip to Europe in favor of work. Way to go Jake (and hopefully we’ll be able to make it up to him down the road when he’s more settled into his new job.)

Now to the ‘Why now?’ part of the Italy trip

Aaron is a junior at Madison, and we’re pretty sure the summer of 2019 is likely to be an important one for him in terms of an internship or similar in his major of Dietetics. We didn’t want a vacation getting in the way of that, so his winter break seemed like the best moment.Which means we’re traveling in Italy during the winter. The good part of this: It should be around 50 there, which will seem like summer to those of us already in the 20s and 30s. Another benefit is that fewer tourists will be there, which means we’ll have less competition for sights, classes, museums, strolls and more. And, of course, I’m stoked that I don’t even have to think ONE SECOND about putting on a bathing suit to soak in the sun at one of Italy’s stunning beaches. So that’s the short-ish reason of why and why now.Stay tuned for insights into our entire planning process: from choosing locations, flights, lodging, packingactivities, sightseeing and language as we finish our planning. Our goal for anything we put in this space is to enlighten and entertain. We’ll likely be developing a podcast, vlog or both, for those who would rather watch than read about the trip. And knowing Dean and myself, there will be plenty to laugh about along the way!Cheers,CindySome of the resources we’re using:AirbnbGoogle FlightsDuolingoGoogle Drive & MapsAlitaliaOrbitzDean’s new travel packpackOur favorite camera and lens for the trip

Love Story: Jan & Brian’s is Something Special

Love Story Films are the quickest and most beautiful way for a couple to share the magic of how they met with each and every guest at their wedding at the same time.

Jan and Brian’s Love Story Film had another mission, too: To tell the guests of their vow renewal the harrowing details of Jan’s brain tumor diagnosis and recovery, which began just a few months after their engagement.

Love Story to a ‘T’

Their Love Story started out like many others we’ve filmed:

  • Boy meets girl.

  • Chemistry ignites.

  • Boy asks out girl.

  • First date goes spectacularly badly.

  • Girl and boy give it another shot.

  • Second date goes spectacularly well!

  • Chemistry smolders.

  • Love builds.

  • Sweet daughter Coralie makes a welcome appearance!

  • Boy makes sunset wedding proposal in Door County.

  • Girl says yes!

This Illinois couple were all set for a spectacular destination wedding in Door County, the location of the proposal and where Brian spent many summers as a kid. Everything was coming together, including plans for a gorgeous ceremony and reception at Gordon Lodge in Baileys Harbor with Door County Event Planners.

And this is where Jan and Brian’s Love Story takes a huge detour.

But we’re going to let you watch their Love Story Film rather than explain everything here. Why? Because the two of them tell their story in their own words far better than we can in written form.

Love a good story

That’s the beauty of telling your own Love Story, in your own way, to everyone all at once. This was especially the case for Jan and Brian, who more than anything wanted their wedding to be a joyous occasion.

We hope you enjoy Jan and Brian’s Love Story Film, which fills our hearts with joy because of the challenges these two have faced and overcome.Cheers,Cindy
