Big Surprises in Small Pretty Box

Big surprises: Who doesn’t love them?

I know I love them, and I also like giving them as well. That’s why we send each Sweet Pea Cinema couple a lovely little package containing a hard copy of their wedding project, a decadent treat and a few other surprises.

We want Sweet Pea couples to know that we are thinking of their wedding film from the moment they book us, through the planning process, into the actual event, during the long editing process, and finally when we get the whole thing ready for shipping.

Big surprises call for extra steps

Lots of videographers simply upload files to a sharing site and call it a day. But we know how special your project is, and we want it presented in a way that helps prepare you for the emotional journey that’s contained inside.

It’s just our little way of going the extra mile to show our care and gratitude for couples placing their trust in us to produce their wedding film.

We’ve been super happy to see couples share the arrival of their box on Instagram and Facebook. So … one wonders if it’s REALLY about making you feel special, or about us filling up the well of gratitude in the gesture?

Since we both end up happy, I’d say it really doesn’t matter!

Big appreciation

If you’ve been on the receiving end of a Sweet Pea white box, hit the comments below and let us know what that experience was like, and definitely tell us what it was like to view your film for the first time after you opened the box.If you’re interested in some of the items we use for our packaging, you can check out the list below!

Cheers,
Cindy

Life and Love Win at Gordon Lodge

Life is precious, and no couple knows that more than Jan and Brian.

These two gathered family and friends at Gordon Lodge in Baileys Harbor earlier this month for a renewal of their vows.

You see, these two had exchanged marriage promises earlier this year, just days before Jan underwent surgery for a major illness.

They had been planning the wedding of their dreams at their favorite place in the world: Door County. But Jan’s diagnosis, roughly 10 months before their scheduled wedding date, pushed these two to make it official before Jan had surgery. They both felt it was the right thing to do because they wanted their little girl, Coralie, to be protected.Jan hastily bought a dress online, Brian dusted off a suit and they put pretty ribbons in the hair of their precious daughter.

As many tears flowed at that quiet church wedding as did the smiles.

Thankfully, Jan’s surgery and recovery went well, and the two decided that after all the anguish and struggle they had faced, a celebratory party was in order. And what a party it was! We were also so happy to work with Chandra from Door County Event Planners and Jason Mann Photography. Those pros really know how to meld everyone into a team that works flawlessly for the couple.

Sun breathes life into a cloudy day

The day was supposed to be overcast, but the sun peeked out just in time for the ceremony. It also glowed at sunset for some truly gorgeous footage of these two.

The ceremony included three Filipino wedding traditions: a present of coins, a covering of a veil and a tying of the two in a silken rope. These rituals are always so symbolic when a couple is bringing together two cultures.

After a brief photo and video jaunt in the enchanted forests of Gordon Lodge, the couple joined their guests for a special presentation: a love story film about their journey.

We loved what Jan had to say about their vow renewal. She said they had always wanted to get married in Door County and this celebration was a chance to breathe in the fresh air, gather loved ones and celebrate the major victories they had won.

And Brian said it well, too: Many drinks of happiness were going to flow.

We can’t begin to explain how wonderful it was to capture Jan and Brian’s Love Story and Wedding. We hope you enjoy this Sneak Peek as much as we do!

Cheers,

Cindy

She’s My Girl – Bridget and Chris at Black Swan MKE

“She’s my girl.”

Those are the words Chris said just a few hours before marrying Bridget at the Basilica of St. Josaphat on Milwaukee’s south side.

It’s the way he said it that caught our breath, and we knew that moment of declaring his love would be one of the key scenes in the Sneak Peek of their wedding video.

Bridget, of course, also wore her heart on the sleeve of her delicate bridal robe while she tearfully read a letter from Chris during her wedding prep at The Kimpton Journeyman Hotel. She hadn’t expected to get emotional, but Chris’ sweet note touch just the right note. Tears of joy!

These are just a few moments that led to their wedding ceremony at the Basilica, the same location where Chris’ parents tied the knot roughly 30 years ago. If you haven’t been to this holy place, it’s an absolute must. Its beauty and grandeur are devotions to God and sacred ceremonies.

Getting the party started

Finishing the night, the couple, along with their parents, hosted family and friends at Black Swan MKE, where we hadn’t filmed before; talk about a dramatic entrance with plunging stairs into the main event space!

The rough timber pillars and cream city brick, along with windows and doors that face the Milwaukee River, are enchanting, as was Bridget and Chris’ reception.

We’ve never seen a bundt cake at a wedding, but loved it!

And their choreographed first dance had everyone in the crowd smiling and clapping.

As everyone else joined in the dancing, a mystery guest popped in and the place erupted in cheers.

Bucky Badger amped up the party with a little “Jump Around” for these University of Wisconsin-Madison grads.

We are so happy for these two, whose indefatigable spirits were pure joy to film. We hope you enjoy this Sneak Peek until we can finish their full project down the road.

Cheers,

Cindy

Love and Faith Conquer All at Gesu Church

Here’s a scene about love and faith that I need to set.

Elizabeth is walking toward her groom, John, for their first look. It’s that magical moment when the couple sees each other for the first time before the official wedding ceremony. She glides along in the dappled shadows and light of the Joan of Arc Chapel on the ground of Marquette University, where these two met.

John is all nerves, fidgety hands and feet. Smiling then serious. Waiting. Waiting. Waiting.

There’s a tap on his shoulder, and he turns to his bride. She is stunning. Layers of tulle float around her, gathered at her tiny waist with a satin bow. Long dark hair gathered in an elegant updo with romantic tendrils framing her face. John’s face lights up, and the two hug.

There’s laughter, a few tears, gushing compliments for each other. Both sheepishly share that they are nervous. Which leads to more hugs and more support. The love between these two radiates. Deep and strong.

Elizabeth and John have been through a lot, including the rigors of dental school. Their relationship has been tested as mightily as one can be. So it’s no wonder they seem eager to make it official.

Faith strengthens

But it was the very next moment that made this first look so special.

John asks a simple question: Are you ready to pray?

The two clasp hands, lean in, touching foreheads. The faintest of whispers come from their lips, in perfect unison, said hundreds if not thousands of times together. A quiet, faithful moment to truly launch their wedding day.

Love and faith. Elizabeth and John. Two sides of the same coin.

We loved sharing Elizabeth and John’s day, which officially started with a glorious Mass at the Church of the Gesu. The church’s stunning architecture never fails to fill the souls of all who cross its threshold with awe and light.

It was then off for photos with the amazing Maison and Caleb of Maison Meredith Photography, who were a dream to team up with. Check out their blog and images from the wedding here.

The last stop of the day was the Pulaski Inn on Milwaukee’s south side. This charming event space has an Old World style that seemed the perfect location for Elizabeth and John to host family and friends. We can’t wait to share the hilarious and sweet toasts that John’s siblings gave, but you’ll see a hint of his sister’s in the Sneak Peek.

When dusk arrived, it was time to light up the night sky with sparklers for a moment of fun and illumination. We hope you enjoy this Sneak Peek as we continue to edit their full wedding film!

Cheers,

Cindy

Barn Weddings Hot as Ever: White Oak Savanna

We’ve had the pleasure of filming several barn weddings and appreciate the differences in style, size, amenities and services each site offers: The Farm at Dover, Rustic Manor, The Landing, The Octagon Barn.

On Tuesday, we had the pleasure of touring one of the state’s newest “events sanctuary” in southeastern Wisconsin: White Oak Savanna in the Driftless Area. For those unfamiliar with the region, it’s roughly defined by the Upper Mississippi River Valley of the southeastern corner of Minnesota, southwest Wisconsin, northwest Illinois and northeast Iowa. Oh, and it’s very, very pretty country!

Barn wedding: Budgets and food

We had a double mission yesterday for the visit. First, we got to tour the facility with Jill Heilman, Director of Events, as part of our first outing with Madison NACE (National Association of Catering and Events). We joined the group after our studio expansion widened our “home base area” to all of southern Wisconsin, from Milwaukee to La Crosse.

Second, we wanted to attend this particular NACE meeting to hear a presentation, “Behind the Budget,” by Sarah Davidson of Harmonious Union Events.  We always strive to understand more fully what couples prioritize for their weddings and how videography fits into a range of budgets. Sarah’s presentation was outstanding, and we’re hoping to interview her for a post in the future, which we think will help couples starting out their wedding budgeting journey!

Tuesday’s meeting included lunch from Enos Farms, the only farm-to-table caterer we’ve ever had the joy of sampling at a wedding (thank you Appy & Eric!). The food at their wedding at Burlap and Bells was so memorable that Dean and I are still raving about it. Especially a fresh root vegetable sala with beets that made it a sweet pink color. For Tuesday’s NACE lunch at White Oak, Erin and her husband, Jeremy, did an outstanding job once again. (We plan to email her to see if we can score her recipe for Whiskey Ginger Meatballs, which were among several delicious dishes we tasted, and maybe the root veggie salad, too!)We also wanted to get a glimpse of White Oak Savanna, and it did not disappoint.

Barn wedding ceremony sites

The barn wedding site, which is a working organic farm in Dodgeville, is just a stone’s throw from the heart of Frank Lloyd Wright country in Spring Green. In fact, the original farm was owned by Wright’s cousin, Charles, and spanned 100 acres.

Today, owners Paul and Audrey Gaynor retain 87 of those acres, which are peppered with spaces absolutely perfect for a wedding or large gathering. The large barn, dubbed the Lloyd Jones Barn Pavilion, is mammoth. It can comfortably seat 200, with additional seating in a tent or other surrounding buildings. There are three primary wedding ceremony locations — the Savanna Sanctuary, the Pond Amphitheater and the Sun Dial — all with unique features you can read about on the farm’s website.

The property also has some amazing lodging options, including the cute-as-a-button Driftless Cottage and the Norwegian Hollow Farmhouse that sleeps 13. There are also 13 campsites available for rent, for adventurous wedding guests who want to spend a night under the stars. One last impressive amenity is the Bluestem Kitchen Complex. It is outfitted with everything a professional chef or catering company would ever want to produce an outstanding meal. Dean, the resident chef at Sweet Pea Cinema, is not allowed to go into this space.  We fear he might chuck all his other endeavors and volunteer to be White Oak’s creator of all things delicious.

Barn wedding kind of day

Tuesday happened to be a glorious fall day: 81 degrees by midday with a bluebird sky that took our breath away.

As we walked along the pathways of White Oak, we soaked in the sun and the savanna sounds: wind rustling the trees and grasses, birds chirping. We wanted to reach out and grab this afternoon and tuck it away for one of those frigid winter days when the sun hasn’t peeked out in weeks.

Thanks to Jill and the Madison NACE gang for the tour and invitation to join. We hope to be filming a barn wedding at White Oak in the near future!

Cheers,
Cindy
