Handcrafted Goods Make Our Hearts Flutter

Handcrafted goods are special and always unique.

When an artisan pours his or her heart into a piece, quality and customization can be second to none.

Case in point: My new writing desk.

I had been working on a folding table, yes, a plastic folding table, because I couldn’t find the right desk for my office. I thought the shame of working on a plastic table would motivate me to find the right desk, but no. I worked on it for two years while I frittered around looking for the perfect desk.

Actually I have always worked on two desks. One plain but sturdy model outfitted with a VariDesk, which allows me to alternate standing and sitting while I work, easing my chronic back issues. It’s my main editing space where I spend hours and hours editing video. It doesn’t need to be anything special because my focus is entirely on the work that beams out through my double monitors.

But I also like to have a second workspace for writing, paperwork and other chores that come with running a small business. With my video-editing desk occupied with large monitors, computers, RAID arrays, external disks and other stuff, it was not the place to write a simple thank you card or other correspondence.

Whenever I tried writing there, the millions of gigabytes of footage and audio would be whispering in my ear, making it almost impossible to ignore.

So I began my hunt for a second desk.

I searched furniture galleries, antique stores and online. Some desks had the right style, but weren’t big enough. Others were plenty big, but too fussy or ugly. My “go-to” for reasonable office furniture — Ikea — didn’t have anything that I thought would hold up to daily use, and nothing had the style and warmth I was looking for.

Then my husband suggested I ask a dear friend and master carpenter, Patrick Olson, if he would be willing to take on the project. I LOVED the idea. I mean, I make handcrafted art — digitally handcrafted — for my own clients, so I loved the idea of supporting someone else’s creative goals.

Honestly I usually don’t have the budget or patience to wait for handcrafted goods.

“Things” are not a big priority for me. I’d much rather spend time with people, having experiences that feed my soul, than put another knickknack on the shelf. But for pieces that will be with me for years to come, an artisan piece is a perfect fit.

I knew Patrick had the skills (check out his work here), but I wasn’t sure he had the time. But in typical Patrick fashion, he was enthusiastic about the project.

So, I sent him several photos of desks I liked but were missing a key element or two. It had to have a wood top, and I was really hoping for chunky and sturdy metal legs. I knew the wood part would be easy for Patrick, and I was so happy to learn that he also enjoyed working with metal. We had a few back-and-forth emails about design, and then — voila! — he had my beautiful new desk ready in a couple of months.

Handcrafted to order

I asked Pat to share a bit of his process.

“For the top, I used big box store construction materials, selecting them carefully so that I could find the best boards that would produce the least warping,” he wrote to me. “I welded everything using 18-gauge metal, and I felt that it was important to make the table base so that it could be broken down for transporting. I was a super fun project built with regular stock materials. I always have fun making things that are somewhat unconventional.”

Easy transport was key for us, because we were moving the desk from St. Paul, Minnesota, where Pat and his lovely yoga-loving wife Lauri live, to Milwaukee, where our studio is and it had to fit in our SUV. Not an easy task for a 60-inch wide and 30-inch tall desk. It’s that kind of detail that comes with items handmade to your specification.

When we finally saw the desk, I was blown away. It has a beautifully joined wood top with lots of movement in the grain, which makes the writing surface warm and inviting. The metal legs have clean lines and are as sturdy as I had asked for.

We brought the new desk home and had every intention of immediately staining and protecting it with polyurethane, and then putting it together. But then life got in the way. We ended up moving and the desk project fell to the wayside from all the selling and buying of houses, packing, moving, unpacking … oh and working!

My beautiful desk sat in our cold garage the entire winter, but when spring hit, we put it back on the priority list.

Dean stained it and gave it several protective coats (because I’m a bit of a klutz!). Then last weekend, we tore apart the entire editing studio to make room for the new beauty.

Purging and reorganizing is a pain, but the resulting peace I get working in an environment that is calm and put together is freeing.

Now, every time I sit down to write a letter, thank you note or correspondence with a client, I take a moment to admire the handiwork and creativity of Patrick, and I enjoy the warm and clean writing surface beneath my fingers.

It’s the kind of appreciation I hope Sweet Pea couples have for the films that we shoot and edit just for them. Every clip is carefully culled, music searched for just the right tone and feel, and graphics that fit with a wedding’s style.I’d love to hear about custom or handmade pieces you’ve invested in for your home!

Cheers,
Cindy

For Fathers, A Wedding Gift of Time

Fathers often are the silent sentry of a wedding. Calm, steady and always ready with an arm to escort their daughter down the aisle.

That processional moment can be a doozy for dads. Seeing their daughter for the first time in a stunning gown? And there are plenty of nerves jingling, thinking about escorting her up the aisle to her waiting groom. The emotions — and tears — can flow.

That’s why we love first looks with fathers. It’s a special moment, usually just before the wedding ceremony, when a dad gets to see his daughter, give her one last hug and kiss before she becomes a married woman, and let feelings flow in a more private setting.

Take Megan and her father, Mark. Megan couldn’t wait to show off her ensemble to her dad just before the ceremony at Grand Geneva earlier this year. And as expected, tears of joy fell as the two embraced. Once the waterworks slowed, Megan’s mom, Darlene, joined, and a tight, loving hug was just the ticket to set this bride walking confidently down the aisle. And the moment gave Mark time to gather his thoughts and excitement.

Tips for a special moment with fathers

So, if you know your father might need a little extra time to take it all in, schedule a first look with him. And if you do, here are a few tips on making the most of that moment:

  • Time! Don’t rush this moment. We suggest allotting 15-20 minutes to get all the hugging, admiring, compliments and more hugging done. Make sure to also give yourself enough time to touch up makeup and get to and ready for the processional.

  • Tissues: Grab a handful of them because in our experience the bride and the father tend to need them. (Brides: Make sure to blot, not rub, or your makeup artists will not be happy with the streaks that could result).

  • Water: Tears and emotions can lead to dry eyes and mouths, so make have water on hand to hydrate. Besides, it’s really the last moment either one of you will get a refreshment before the ceremony.

  • Gift: Consider a special gift or card for your father. Dads are known for their generosity on a wedding day, and we can’t tell you how awed fathers are when brides or grooms present them with a gift to thank them for all their love and support.

What if a father first look isn’t in the plan? You can also show off your amazing ensemble to your attendants and, of course, to your groom. Planning a big reveal to those closest to you is a wonderful moment of joy and excitement. So, definitely consider it when crafting your perfect wedding timeline.

We hope you enjoy watching a few of these fabulous Father First Looks from our Sweet Pea weddings, and don’t hesitate to comment, email or call if you have questions about a first look with your dad.Cheers!CindyCheck out our reviews!

Family Comes First at Beautiful Farm at Dover Wedding

Family almost always play key roles in any wedding.

For Amanda and Austin’s beautiful July wedding at The Farm at Dover, which the couple selected because of its gorgeous gardens and the beauty of the barn, that certainly was the case.

We’ll start with Austin’s dad, Ron, who had the courage to preside over the ceremony as the officiant, having been ordained online. He centered the ceremony around Mathew 19:5:

This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.

When Ron pronounced the couple “Mr. and Mrs. Austin Pett,” you could hear pride in every word as he spoke it.

Family Part II

Then the family participation came next with two of the other leading ladies of the day: Amanda’s mom, Jackie, and Austin’s mom, Deb. Both of these charming women gave richly detailed toasts that gave insights into the lives of the bride and groom, and why their relationship was destined to be forged in marriage.

In addition to her welcome speech, Jackie also planned an incredible surprise for her daughter, who she escorted down the aisle because her husband and Amanda’s father, Kevin, had passed. After the cake cutting and formal dances, Jackie’s father took to the microphone and introduced a special presentation, saying that he knew somewhere in this magical place that Kevin was looking down at everything and saying to him: Don’t mess it up!

So, a  projector screen was ushered in as if by magic, but really through the thoughtful planning of Timeless Events and Van Rixel Productions.

Amanda was asked to join her brother, Alex, on the dance floor. A video began to play. And what a video it was.

A colleague of Jackie’s had compiled dozens of photos and video of Amanda and her father from the time she was a baby to young lady. Amanda and Alex — and everyone else in the room — watched the screen intently. Many with tears of appreciation and love streaming down their faces.

It was a moment to cherish and will play a big role in Amanda and Austin’s feature film to come.

Until then, enjoy this Sneak Peek, which focuses the joyous moments of the day, how these two giggled and hugged, how family helped them formally launch their marriage.

Cheers, Cindy

Tender Private Vows at The Landing 1841

Tender moments occur all the time at weddings. But Katie and Kyle had one of the most poignant and loving of moments just minutes before their wedding last month at The Landing 1841, on the banks of the appropriately named (for a wedding venue) Honey Creek.

The two had decided to exchange personal vows with each other before the ceremony during a “first touch.”

What’s a first touch you ask? Let me explain. It’s when the bride and groom spend a few moments together before their ceremony holding hands and talking, but not seeing each other. It’s a way of calming the nerves and physically connecting without stealing the thunder of the grand entrance the bride makes when she walks down the aisle.

The two carefully met under a stately tree that casts glorious shade, especially on this scorching Wisconsin summer day when the thermometer topped well over 90. As Katie and Kyle reached for each other’s hand, their smiles revealed how comforting that first touch was.

Then it was time for their private promises to each other. And what vows they were!

Kyle reached back to the very first time he met Katie, recalling that he immediately knew she was someone special. Katie lingered on all of the support Kyle has offered during their relationship. The tears flowed between the two … and from the small group of witnesses.

It moved us so much, that we have made it the centerpiece of their Sneak Peek. We hope you agree that is shows the best in a relationship and its future.

Ceremony by Honey Creek

Then the whirlwind of a day truly began. First, with the ceremony that included a beautiful “tying of the knot” ritual. The location, tucked under ancient, towering trees and on the banks of Honey Creek, could not have been more beautiful. One of the most compelling moments came when Katie’s father, Rick, mustered all his energy to rise from his wheelchair and escort his beautiful daughter the final few steps down the aisle to her groom.

Again, it was a tender moment that few will forget.

After a ceremony that included a “tying of the knot” ritual, it was on to lawn games and cocktails for the guests, while the bridal party wiped their misty brows and smiled through awesome photos by Elizabeth Haas Photography. You can check out her beautiful images here.

The Landing 1841

I’d be remiss if I didn’t describe a bit about The Landing, which is a fairly new event space in Burlington. First, it’s set on a gorgeous bend of the aforementioned Honey Creek and on a sprawling tract of land. It’s spacious barn has two distinct wings that allows for great movement for a wedding. From the outside, the barn looks like a modern marvel, but once you walk up the grand walkway to the French doors and enter, you see that much of the original wood has been preserved or shored up. A perfect blend of rustic and sophistication, the barn has twinkling chandeliers, a built-in bar, updated restrooms and a spacious deck.

Another wonderful aspect of The Landing is that the bridal party has access to a completely updated farmhouse for prep. There’s ample room and plenty of windows that offer perfect light for makeup and hair.

A tender dance, too

Our other favorite moment during the wedding was after Katie and Kyle’s first dance. As tradition often calls for, Katie and her father entered the dance floor space. Rick marshaled all his energy to take a few steps on the dance floor with his Katie girl. There wasn’t a single person who wasn’t glued to the center of the floor.

We are always so honored to film weddings, and Katie and Kyle’s is no exception. They went to great lengths to make all of their guests feel welcomed and loved, and you could see the same emotion being radiated back to these two.

Congrats to the newlyweds!!

Grand Geneva wedding with energy and elegance

Megan and Mitch have more than enough energy and positive outlooks to fuel a whole army. This statement is illustrated perfectly in the VERY LAST SCENE of their Sneak Peek video … but more on that further along in this post.

At their Grand Geneva wedding in May, Megan and Mitch were crackling with the energy that comes from marrying the one you love and sharing that moment with family and friends … and their adorable pooch, Yeti. You could see it in their smiles, their unbridled joy. What a joy to film these two formalize the the official start of their family.

M&M met through work, and we loved the way officiant Bradley Schnell revealed their love story in the ceremony with humor and emotion. For instance, everyone laughed, recalling that at one time, Mitch thought the two were on a date, while Megan’s perspective was that they were just in the “friend zone.”

Fast forward a few months, and the mutual attraction was apparent and lasting.

Energy all day

For their wedding, the weather could not have been more beautiful, with overcast skies that kept everyone cool for the outdoor ceremony that morphed into incredible pink and blue just before the reception.

Guests were greeted at the ceremony with a stunning view overlooking the resort’s main lake and golf course, as well as refreshing water, soda and beer in ice-filled tubs, as this couple loves to bring — and be the life of — the party. And speaking of party, M&M hired a live band — Big Al Wetzel Band — for their reception, which is another one of the best ways to crank up the energy and fun at a gathering.

We loved the toast that Megan’s father, Mark, gave at the reception, because it so perfectly described how everyone feels about these two. And so his words are the centerpiece of the Sneak Peek. Mark began by recalling how he had tried and tried — 25 times or so — to write the toast he was to give the night of Megan’s wedding. And yet, as he tried to collect his thoughts, his emotions would get the best of him, and he’d have to take a break. All that contemplation did the trick, though. He began by talking about the spark that Megan has always brought to their family, and how that energy has grown with the addition of Mitch. Perfect.

We also focused on a few words from officiant Brad, who had the crowd laughing and tearing up while telling the broad strokes of their love story. He also artfully ushered the couple through a unique blending ritual, when the two created a Black and Tan drink from a Guinness and Spotted Cow. What a fun, unique and delicious way to signify the joining of two people and families.

Hints and surprises

And what about that hint about their Sneak Peek that we gave at the beginning of this post? Well, if you haven’t watched it already, you must … and all the way to the end. It’s only just over a minute long, so you can handle it!

We can honestly say: We have NEVER seen a bride and groom pull off such an amazing MOVE in their first dance. AH-MAZ-ING!!!

Congrats to the newlyweds, and we hope their Sneak Peek keeps everyone entertained until their full film is done!

Cheers, Cindy
